SS FLAT: FINISHES AND PROPERTIES
Stainless steel comes in a variety of types, including ferritic, austenitic, martensitic, and duplex. The content of the Stainless Steel Flat varies depending on the formulation. The most common ones are the austenitic Stainless steel is 304 grade. Moreover, this material has 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel in the composition.
On the other hand, Stainless Steel Flat is a specific prefabricated stainless steel strip. These Stainless Steel Strips are available in a variety of widths and thicknesses, ranging from 20mm wide x 3mm thick to 100mm wide x 12mm thick, with hundreds of sizes in between.
The stainless steel flat bar is resistant to chloride-ion corrosion. The maritime applications such as ss306 use this in a variety of forms. More and more, in high-strength structural applications, stainless steel flats are standard. The material’s minimum tensile strength is 515 MPa, and its expected yield strength is 205 MPa. Also, the Polished ss Flat Bar can tolerate temperatures as high as 870 degrees Celsius.
The Stainless Steel Flat is tough, corrosion-resistant, and high-temperature tolerant. You can use these bars in shipbuilding, naval, seawater, chemical, food processing, and boiler and heater applications.
In particular, the Slit, Rolled Edge, and Hot Rolled ss Flat Bar is Stainless Steel Flat styles that should be in stock.
THE SLIT & ROLLED EDGE
The Stainless Steel Flat is cut while its edge is rolled and handled to eliminate any sharp burrs after slit from the stainless steel plate. The slitting method will often result in a finished bar with two faces that are not perfectly straight (on the thickness dimension). Of course, if the bar is machined to scale, this would not be an issue; but, if the queerness of the segment is critical, the hot-rolled bar might be a safer option. It’s worth recalling that hot-rolled Stainless Steel Flats come in thicknesses of 10mm and up. Slitting and edge rolling is possible on both 3mm, 5mm, 6mm, and 8mm thick strips.
Also, the major benefit of this style of Flat Bar is that it appears to have a polished finish.
ROLLED IN HEAT
These Stainless Steel flats are usually in a hot process. Also, this method of development results in a segment that is neater and square for stainless steel flats. It is, however, pricier than other types, such as slit and edge rolling. Please take note that the surface finish is very rough, making it unsuitable for polishing.
Apart from these, Stainless Steel Flats manufacture two grades: 304 and 316, regardless of manufacturer.
Grade 304 is generally common in all stainless steel grades because it is a great multipurpose material. It has outstanding strength, stiffness, weldability, formability, and corrosion resistance. It can also be machined.
The ability to resist saltwater is one of the main advantages of using Grade 316, despite its higher cost. As a result, the 316 stainless steel is usually another term for the maritime grade.
Besides, the stainless steel trim strips and ss flat bar are no exception. The product line is vast, with a full range of steel flat bar shapes, lengths, and finishes to meet the customers’ needs.
In fact, slit-rolled edge Stainless Steel Flat is available in two finishes: hot rolled annealed and pickled (HRAP) and slit-rolled edge Stainless Steel Flat (SRE). SS flats experienced hot rolling, annealing, and pickling, and they have gone through a lengthy process. It’s rolled on a hot strip mill first (hot rolled). The next step is annealing, which includes heating cooled stainless steel to alleviate stress and maintain superior corrosion resistance, which gives the steel its name. However, annealing leaves a scale on the steel’s surface, which experiences extracting in the final process, pickling. Pickling is the method of extracting scale from steel by immersing it in a chemical solution.
THE SIZES OF STAINLESS STEEL FLAT
Midway Metals uses a slit rolled edge flat bar system to produce a slit rolled edge SS Flat, a specialty operation. This unit is the only one of Flattens, straightens, edges, and slices Stainless Steel Flats in widths ranging from 20 to 200mm on this unit. The most significant advantage is that manufacturing SS Flats is at a faster rate than ever before and can offer lengths ranging from 2 to 6 meters as required.
In particular, a Stainless Steel Flat can typically cut to a regular length of 4 meters, but custom lengths and sizes are available through requests. SS Flat is a construction material that distributes for roll shaping, brackets, and bracing.
On the other hand, the Soft 316 Polished Flat Bar is one of the other options. Therefore, it presents a matte finish and upon the use of 316 stainless steel. The only distinction is that it contains chromium, copper, and 4% molybdenum. More corrosion resistance is a result of the molybdenum content than by the 304 standards. The sizes of ASTM A276 ss 304 Flat bars offer great choices depending on the application. The content is available in widths ranging from 5mm to 500mm and lengths of up to 6m.
TYPES AND FINISHES OF STAINLESS STEEL FLAT
Stainless Steel Flat is available in a range of alloys, the most popular of which are 303, 304, and 316. It is available in many styles and finishes.
In addition, the sheared plate is mostly edge treated and put on the market as the flat bar and Real Flat Bar, which is made to scale. It is one of the most communal differences in metal flat bars. At the same time, a Stainless Steel Flat is being offered in the market in the same manner.
The mill produces HRAP (Hot Rolled, Annealed, and Pickled) to the specified scale. The finish is almost equal on all four edges. The capability and tolerances should be within a few thousandths of an inch, which is often what you call “True Flat Bar.” The corners should be relatively straight, and the tolerance should be fairly similar to the exact size specified, and that is typically within some thousandths of an inch.
Not only a true flat bar is normally in HRAP condition, but it may be through a cold-drawn process on occasions. Fabricators often use this bar because it has reasonably sharp corners and tighter thickness and width tolerances than shearing and edging, and it is often in use when the project needs polishing. In addition, when corner sharpness and tolerances aren’t important, this is a far more cost-effective way to buy a flat bar. True bars are usually 12′-14′ random lengths, whereas bars from sheared and edged are typically in 12′ dead lengths.
Following this, sheared and edged is a product from ss that went through the process of bar cutting and refining. The edges have a milled finish that differs somewhat from the smooth surfaces. Cut and edged bar is not as dimensionally actual as a real flat bar, despite its nature of flatness and straightness as portion of the process. Despite this, it is still a feasible and much fewer expensive substitute compared to a factual flat bar.
Subsequently, finishes have two regular finishes available: HRAP and Cold Finished or also named Cold Drawn. Then, the HRAP or Hot Rolled, Annealed, and Pickled or MILL Finish has a dull grey, rugged finish and dimensionally larger than specified sizes.
And finally, a cold finished is a shinier finish with high-pitched edges and dimensional sizes that are alike to the specified scale. The 303 alloy is the most broadly used to create this finish.
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF SS FLAT
The classifications of the stainless flat bar are ss304, ss304L, ss316, ss316L. The elements comprising each ss flat bar are Carbon, Chromium, Manganese, Nickel, Phosphorous, Sulfur, and Silicon.
First, the ss304 and ss304L comprise 8.0-11.0 carbon, 18.0-20.0 chromium, a maximum of 2.0 of Manganese, 8.0-11.0 Nickel, a maximum of 0.045 phosphorous, a maximum of 0.03 sulfur, and a maximum of 1.0 amount of Silicon.
Deferring from ss304 and ss 304L, ss316 and ss316L are from the mixtures of 0.08 carbons, 18.0 of chromium, 2.00 manganese, and 14.0 amount of phosphorous. They usually differ in the amount of sulfur and Silicon.
Whereas SS316 requires a maximum of 0.03 sulfur and a maximum amount of 0.07 silicon. On the other hand, SS316L needs a maximum total of 3.00 sulfur and only 0.10 maximum amount of Silicon.
