STAINLESS STEEL REFERENCE TOOL

Hardness &
tensile strength
converter.

Compare stainless steel hardness scales and tensile strength. Enter what you know. Published references come first; labelled formula estimates fill the gaps, up to 840 HV.

Start with what you know.

HV
CALCULATION RANGE · REFERENCES + FORMULAS108–840 HV

Published references take priority. Formulas fill missing values within the equivalent 108–840 HV calculation range. This range is not a valid test range for every scale.

MATERIAL DETAILS OPTIONAL

Grade selects available strength references. Grades without a dedicated profile use labelled general austenitic estimates. Temper adds context, not a correction factor.

Test information optional

Retained with your result. Available for HV input; it does not certify a matching test load.

Conversions are approximate. Grade, processing and test method affect the relationship. Thin strip and foil may need a different test method. Confirm acceptance requirements by direct testing.

This calculation was provided by Myriad Stainless Steel, a specialized supplier of stainless steel foil that primarily offers stainless steel foil in thicknesses ranging from 0.01 to 0.3 mm(0.0004~ 0.012inch). If you have any needs for stainless steel foil, please contact: info@myriadsteel.com

A reference is more useful
when you can see its source.

Published comparisons and formula-filled estimates have different limits. Each result is labelled so you can see which applies.

01

Hardness to hardness

Atlas austenitic and independent BSSA comparisons take priority. Missing values are filled by monotonic formulas: linear extensions for HB, segmented extensions for HRC and a bounded high-end HRB curve. Formula extensions are estimates, not new measured data.

Hardness and strength

Published manufacturer profiles and isolated paired examples are checked first. Fallback strength formulas use the observed Rm/HV coefficient span from ordinary 301, 304 and 316L profiles. Proprietary 301 processing variants are excluded from these extended formulas.

03

What the span means

The formula strength span shows the spread of reference coefficients; it is not a confidence interval or a guaranteed material range. A 316 fallback uses a clearly labelled 316L proxy. Other grades without dedicated data use a general austenitic estimate. Independent condition bands are retained as bands rather than fitted into paired endpoints.

Can I convert tensile strength back to hardness?

Yes. Select MPa or ksi as the known measurement. The tool uses matching published references first, then labelled formula estimates for missing outputs. Formula combinations outside 108–840 HV are excluded from reverse estimation, which can narrow the displayed model span near its limits.

Why does a soft input show HRC < 20?

When a low-end HRC model result falls below the display range, the tool shows < 20 instead of an unsuitable numeric estimate. Use HV or HRB for the soft-material comparison. High-end HRB and HB equivalents may also exceed their test ranges and are labelled accordingly.

Are formula estimates as reliable as published references?

No. Formulas fill the numerical gaps, including values beyond published reference coverage. They have not been validated for your grade, processing condition, thickness or test load. A numerical estimate does not establish a usable test scale, material conformity or a quantified error bound.

What happens when I choose a temper?

Continuous manufacturer profiles remain cross-temper reference comparisons, with published nominal points shown for the selected temper. Condition bands and isolated examples are filtered to matching or unknown selections. The selection does not create a temper-specific calibration.

Can I use this to accept a material shipment?

Keep the original measurement, test method, load, material specification and traceable report. Converted references do not establish conformity, replace a required tensile test or prove that a hardness test is valid on your material’s thickness.
